Simple Wi-Fi Checks and Fixes

Quick steps to get a slow or unstable home Wi Fi working again

Step by step

  1. Check router lights — power, internet, Wi‑Fi indicators should be steady green.
  2. Restart the router — unplug the power for 30 seconds, plug back in and wait 2–3 minutes.
  3. Move closer to the router and test — stand near it and run a speed test (Google “speed test”).
  4. Reduce interference — keep the router away from microwaves, cordless phones and large metal objects.
  5. Check connected devices — disconnect one device at a time to see if one is hogging bandwidth.
  6. Change Wi‑Fi channel (basic) — log into the router’s web page, look for wireless settings and try a less crowded channel (1, 6 or 11 for 2.4GHz).
  7. Consider a reboot schedule or power cycle weekly and discuss mesh/booster options if coverage is poor.

Troubleshooting (quick fixes)

  • No internet light: try a different wall socket for the router and check your ISP outage page or phone line.
  • Very slow speeds: test with one device wired to the router; if wired is fine, the issue is Wi‑Fi coverage.
  • Frequent drops: move router higher and central; try changing channel; update router firmware if available.
  • Still stuck: note router make/model and call your ISP or book a tech visit.

Tips

Keep router firmware up to date; note admin login details on a printed card.

Use a guest network for visitors to protect your main network.

Label the router and backup Wi‑Fi details for carers or family.

Printable summary (one line)

Check lights → restart router → test near router → reduce interference → check devices → try channel change → consider booster.
